New Government New Hope

With Gov. Elect Eddie B. Calvo and Lt. Gov. Tenorio, we have new hope. Let’s join in praying for them, that the LORD will be with and shine through them. Help them make the right decisions on the behalf of the welfare and happiness of the people.

Our Reputation For Public Assistance

I was thinking the other day. The world, especially America, chides us for having a welfare system and high unemployment rates, but now in light of the bad economy, we don’t seem that bad now do we? Guam is relatively untouched by the ‘bad economy’ of the US. We’re isolated, now that’s a good thing. Guam has always been able to survive, and I’m guessing we’ll even see State-siders come here or come back given the advent of the build up and seeing as how we have a great welfare system that takes care of it’s own.

Guam Politics, p.1

Right now, the campaigning for the office of Governor is going on. It’s a Clash of the Titans with Gutierrez/Aguon & Eddie B. Calvo/Ray Tenorio & Lt. Gov. Mike Cruz/Sen. Jim Espaldon, all going head to head. All very good candidates. Today, in the paper, Gov. Felix Camacho criticized E. Calvo. Calvo thought is might be a case of miscommunication. But, Camacho does bring up a great point that business and government are essentially different. That begs the question: Is a business person the best candidate for government, which Gov. reminded us is essentially serving the people, not for profit?

The Military Build-up

If you haven’t already heard, the military is building up on Guam. It all started back in 2007 when Japan didn’t want the Marines in Okinawa. There was incredible buzz about the move of some 8,000 Marines and their dependents to Guam, meaning a boost of Federal and other government money with the move. Business people were the most excited of course. It is now 2010, we just got Federal spending approval for this next year, so it looks like it will happen. The move is expected to occur over the next 5-7 years. There’s going to be BILLIONS of dollars in improvements @ the military bases. Slowly, I’ve seen the influx of military and Stateside construction crews. We’ve seen Home Depot, Ruby Tuesday, Chili’s, and now Sears and Chuck E. Cheese come in response. Who’s next?
